One week to go, less and less to the realization of a dream!!! I will be leaving with my trio, which includes Karola and Chichi. ( If you want to know more about who they are, go read the article “Getting to know each other - Jan Team 2025 ”in the blog.)
Here I will briefly show you who Humana People to People is and my project, “Youth in action,” which will keep me busy 6 months in Zambia.
Humana People to People and Support for Projects in Africa and in India
Humana People to People is an international organization committed to promoting social and environmental sustainability through development and solidarity initiatives. One of the main tools through which Humana supports its projects is the recycling and sale of second-hand clothing.
The collection of used clothing takes place through dedicated containers located in numerous cities, as well as through donations from individuals and companies. Once collected, the clothes are sorted and directed to different channels: a portion is sold in Humana stores, helping to finance development programs in various countries around the world; another portion is directly donated to communities in need; finally, some garments that cannot be reused are recycled to reduce environmental impact.
We had the opportunity to visit Humana Italy and observe firsthand the process of collecting, sorting, and selling clothes. This system not only reduces textile waste and promotes a culture of reuse, but it also allows economic resources to be allocated to social and development projects, including our initiative in Africa and the others in India.
Thanks to the funds generated from the sale of recycled clothing, Humana can support initiatives such as Youth in Action, providing young Africans with opportunities for growth and improving their living conditions. This circular economy model demonstrates how clothing reuse can become a driving force for positive change, generating significant impacts both environmentally and socially.
The “Youth in Action” Project
“Youth in Action” is an extraordinary initiative that allows us to work with young people in Africa, motivating them to discover new opportunities and expand their professional activities within clubs. The primary goal is to provide them with the necessary tools to develop skills, initiatives, and micro-enterprises, focusing on sustainability and improving local conditions. Every step of our intervention aims to create a lasting positive impact that goes far beyond immediate assistance.
A key aspect of our project is education. We will provide young people with essential knowledge in various fields, such as mathematics, infectious disease management, and food security, which serve as a solid foundation for any entrepreneurial activity. Education is the key to lasting change, and through this initiative, we aim to provide practical tools to help them face daily and professional challenges. This knowledge will not only improve their work prospects but will also positively influence the growth of their communities.

Furthermore, the project promotes sustainability initiatives such as tree planting and the use of eco-friendly tools. These projects are essential for improving natural resource management and contributing to environmental well-being. Sustainability is not just an environmental issue; it is also a core pillar of our mission: we want young people to engage in activities that have a positive impact on both the environment and their communities, creating a better future for everyone.
Our commitment to Youth in Action is therefore closely linked to the work that Humana carries out and represents a concrete example of how recycling and solidarity can be powerful tools to change people's lives. We are proud to be part of this project, which not only helps improve young people's living conditions but also promotes global sustainability that transcends geographical borders. This connection between Italy, Africa, and our project demonstrates how today's actions can create a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
I am ready to go, with my trio, to put myself out there and learn something new every day! I will take you with me on this journey, sharing experiences, challenges and successes.
Zambia, here we come!
Martina
